Writing prompts 5: Children of blood & bones

Ideas – Relate to the real world.
After reading a chapter, there will be a quote from the story. Write about how the idea could be relevant to the real world and its people.
"Gods help us.
I close my eyes, trying to drown the tragedy out. Through it all, the cheers never stop. The praise never ends. As we stand on the platform, the crowd rejoices as if there’s a reason to celebrate this bloodbath.
Beside me, Tzain holds me close; he hasn’t really let go since he carried me from the ship. He keeps his expression vacant, but I can sense his remorse.
Though the competitor in him has prevailed, we’re still covered in the blood of those who have fallen. We may have triumphed, but this is no victory."

Most of us know the movie hunger games. When I read this scene, I start to picture the movie: hunger games. This is because of how Zelie is participating in a game where they would kill each other to become the top or to win, which is exactly what Katniss is doing in the hunger games.

Writing prompts 4: Children of blood and bones

Ideas – Relate to the real world.
After reading a chapter, there will be a quote from the story. Write about how the idea could be relevant to the real world and its people.

Be brave, Amari.
This time I hold onto Binta’s words, wrapping them around my body like a suit of armor. I can be brave. This message can be compared to me and my reality. To me, sport plays a huge part in my life and my family members know that. Whenever I have a sports game or tournament coming up my parents always give me advice because they know that I always seem to doubt myself. Their words always help me to do better in the game which is just like Amari.
Amari uses Binta's words as a message for her to keep going and to believe in herself, to be brave.

Writing prompts 3: Children of blood & bone

Ideas – Relate to the real world.
After
reading a chapter, there will be a quote from the story. Write about how the idea could be relevant to the real world and its people.
“How long?” she breathes. “How long have you been a maji?”
She hisses the word like it’s a curse. Like I’m the spitting image of Lekan. Not the boy she’s known since birth. The soldier she’s trained for years.
“The girl infected me. It’s not permanent.”
“You’re lying.” Her lips peel back in disgust. “Are you…are you working with her?”
“No! I was looking for clues!” I step forward. “I know where she is–”
“Stay back!” Kaea screams. I freeze, hands in the air. There’s no recognition in her eyes.
Only unbridled fear.

This scene can be compared to us as people. I say this because we all have somebody that's close to us or that has been there with us for a long time whether they are a family member or a friend. Kaea is the 2nd lover of Inan's father after his biological mother passed. "How long have you been a maji" this quote gives us the idea that she never knew he was a maji, even when they've known each other for a long time. What I mean is, even though it seems you may know a person because you've known for a long time, there is always something that a person is hiding or something that you never knew.

Boomerangs

Last term, My social studies class and I had done some research on aboriginal history. One thing that played a major part in their history was boomerangs. Aboriginals had three types of different boomerangs and one that we all know is the V-shaped boomerang. That boomerang was used just to entertain the kids and the other two were used to hunt for food and kill wallabies or kangaroos and such. We also did some research on the type of art they would use, for example dotting art or they'll draw animals on them.

During the previous 2 lessons, we had the chance to design one of our boomerangs ourselves.

Explain the purpose of the activity?
The purpose of this activity was to design a boomerang and use the art styles they would use to describe a story or to feel what it is like to be in their shoes and designing one of their most cultures traditions.

Explain the story on your boomerangs, include the meaning of the colours?
The story I did on my boomerang was their prey. The big animal is a kangaroo, (Even though the top may not look like a kangaroo I tried to make it how they would draw it) I did a kangaroo because I know it was one of the animals they would hunt for and because it's the national animal for Australia. I did a lizard for it to stand as the big insects they have in Australia, and the lines were just as aboriginals blood.

What went well when painting your boomerang?
I think my art did really well but one thing I hoped to do better was actually finishing my designs.

Writing prompts 2: Children of blood & bone

Ideas – Relate to the real world. After reading a chapter, there will be a quote from the story. Write about how the idea could be relevant to the real world and its people.
Metal gates fly open on the sides of the arena floor, and an endless flow of water rushes in. This has to be a mirage. Yet liter after liter flows in. The water covers the metal ground, crashing with the expanse of a sea. “How is this possible?” I hiss under my breath, remembering the laborers no more than skin and bone. So many dying for water and they waste it on this? This could be compared to / A message I take from this scene is This message can be compared to our real world because there are many people that don't have the opportunity to get water or food every day and yet so many people waste it everyday. An example is the homeless, many people sit around in the streets hoping that a person will be kind enough to offer them food or water. Some of these people also look through the bin because they know that there would be people throwing their leftovers in there.

Writing prompts: Children of blood & bone

I pause for a moment, aghast at the number of them filling the narrow path. Before today, I caught only glimpses of the laborers brought in to staff the palace—always pleasant, clean, groomed to Mother’s satisfaction. Like Binta, I thought they lived simple lives, safe within the palace walls. I never considered where they came from, where else they might have ended up, “Skies…” It’s almost too hard to bear the sight. Mostly diviners, the laborers outnumber the villagers by hordes, dressed in nothing but tattered rags. Their dark skin blisters under the scorching sun, marred by the dirt and sand seemingly burned into their beings. Each is hardly more than a walking skeleton.  After reading a chapter, there will be a quote from the story. Write about how the idea could be relevant to the real world and its people. A message I take from this scene is, "Their dark skin blisters under the scorching sun, marred by the dirt and sand seemingly burned into their beings. Each is hardly more than a walking skeleton." When reading this, the details that are being used for how the villagers look give me the same view of child labor. It's not just in this book that people are suffering from this, it's actually happening to children and adults in many countries around us. This is compared to child labour because children or even adults work for hours just to get a small amount of water and food, even if the weather conditions are really bad.

Visual Arts

1) Why do we look at street art? Why do we stop when we see it? What is our reaction?
The reason we would stop to look at the beautiful street art is because of all the different meanings each artwork has. For example, some street art is influenced by the social issues or inspirations of other people, like Pink the artist which is shown below. Our reaction towards street art is 'Woah', or inspired.
2) Why do we need and use visual symbols around us? We use visual symbols to attract people towards their artwork or business, like Mcdonalds and their letter 'M'.
3) What are examples of common visual symbols in our environment? (collect examples for the drawing - think about what you might be able to use in making artworks later on as you do) Christchurch street art:

Corrosion experiment:

When metals are exposed to the environment they can deteriorate, or break down. Scientist call this process corrosion. Rust is the term used to describe the corrosion of iron. Iron is a relatively cheap metal so it is widely used in the industry.

Aim: To investigate the factors that cause rusting in iron.
Equipment: Six test tubes, test tube rack, a bung, six iron nails, boiled water, tap water, salty water, cooking oil, calcium chloride, Nail polish, Magnesium,
Method:
1. Label the six test tubes from A - F and place in a test tube
2. Test tube contents:
A = Water + Iron nail
B = Salt water + Iron nail
C = Water + Oil + Iron nail
D = Nail polish + Water + Iron nail
E = Mg wrapped around iron nail + Water
F - Calcium chloride + Iron nail - sealed with a bung

3. Leave test tubes undisturbed for at least three days.

Observations -
Nail A = Corroded
Nail B = Corroded

Nail C = Didnt corrode
Nail D = The parts of the nail that wasn't covered by nail polish corroded
Nail E =  It didn't corrode except for the liquid
Nail F =  It didn't corrode

Conclusion:
Rusting on metals occurs when there is water & oxygen present, 5 out of 6 nails both had water and oxygen, and most of these nails ended up rusting. Most of our nails corroded because they all had access to oxygen and water.  When oxygen and water aren't present, the metal or nail doesn't rust, for example, nail F. Nail F had no oxygen because it was closed off with a bung, and no water was added into it, so Nail F was a success. Nail C was a success because the oil blocked the entrance for the oxygen so the oxygen couldn't get in. Nail D also didn't have access to water because it was coated with nail polish, that's why the parts that weren't covered in nail polish ended up corroding.

*Our nail with oil ended up corroding because somebody mixed the oil, but all the other group's nails with oil didnt

Metal Carbonates and Acid

When a metal carbonate reacts with an acid it will form a salt, carbon dioxide, and water. Carbon dioxide is a gas and can be seen as bubbles as the reaction proceeds.

Metal carbonate + Acid ------------> Salt + Carbon dioxide + water

Aim: To show that carbon dioxide gas is produced when a metal carbonate reacts with the acid
Equipment: Two boiling tubes, delivery tube, and bung, Bunsen burner, test tube rack, wooden splint, a bottle of acid, small amount of metal carbonate, test tube tongs, safety glasses.
Method:
1. Light your bunsen burner.
2. Add a pea-sized amount of metal carbonate into one of the boiling tubes.
3. Place the boiling tube into a test tube rack. Ensure you have the bung and delivery tube ready
4. Add 5mL of acid to the boiling tube and quickly insert the bung and delivery tube into the mouth of the boiling tube
5. Holding the other boiling tube with your tongs, capture the gas produced as shown in the diagram below.

6. When you think the tube is full, your lab partner should light a wooden splint
7. Carefully remove the boiling tube from under the delivery tube, taking care to keep it facing upright.
8. Insert the burning splint into the burning mouth of the test tube.

Observations: When doing the experiment many gas bubbles were being formed in the test tube, and when we put the lit splint in, the flame went out.

Discussion:
- After getting the equipment, we then put in the 2mL of Hydrochloric acid and the Metal carbonate into the conical flask and quickly trapping the air with the bung that is connected to the delivery tube, and on other end of the tube we put it in a test tube where it can capture the gas. When we thought we captured enough gas, my partner lit a wooden splint on fire and placed it where the mouth of the test tube was. What happened was the flame went out and by this happening we now know that carbon dioxide was being present.

Another way we could do to find out if carbon dioxide was present was, In a test tube we put lime-water into it and we put the same things (Hydrochrolic acid & Metal Carbonate) into the conical flask and after we added these in, we quickly trapped it with the bung and the delivery tube, and at the end of the delivery tube we placed it into the lime-water. After holding it there for a while we notice that the lime-water was getting cloudy, and by this after effect towards the lime-water we could see that carbon dioxide was present.
